We arrived in Kahului on Saturday morning and drove into Hana.

Training meeting on Saturday for the surveying on Sunday.

Six of the seven UH graduate students ready to head out Sunday morning.

Sunday morning training before we head out to survey the local community.  The study compares environmental and behavioral factors in two areas in and near Hana (lower Nahiku and a subdivision in Hana) and their influence on Dengue transmission.

To do this, teams of 3 skilled people (an interviewer, environmental inspectors, and blood drawers) went to every house in the study areas.

Teams get ready to survey the Hana neighborhood.  Teams were made up of CDC personnel, local healthcare personnel, state health officials, and volunteers (like us).

The neighborhood in Hana was fairly residential, and it was often difficult to find mosquito larva in the areas surrounding the houses.

The other survey area was very different. (lower Nahiku)

This is the front gate of one of the lower Nahiku houses that were surveyed.

Getting to some of the houses was also a little more difficult.

It was a bit easier finding mosquitoes in the yards though.

After a day of surveying we were off back to classes.

Thanks to everyone.
