Dr. Effler's presentation was very similar to his presentation in the PH661 "Journal Club" on Oct 15th.
Current Information is available on the DOH website.
He described the disease, virus, transmission vector (Aedes Albopictus mosquito), clinical symptoms and assessment, viral strain and serotype info, treatment, and timeline for the recent outbreak in Hawaii.
Current info: 74 CDC confirmed cases (centered around Hana, Maui area) out of >1000 suspect illnesses and 696 lab tests, there have been no cases of severe outcomes for those infected. Of those 696 tests 52% have been negative, 11% positive, and 37% inconclusive (and presumably for the most part negative) Outbreak seems to be lessening and while surveillance is continuing, a larger outbreak is not expected.
Future: Dengue lab is being set up on Hawaii, which hopefully will improve public health response in future outbreaks. They hope to have a full mosquito survey of Hawaii (to help determine risk for human outbreaks) and it is also hoped that by paying even closer attention to the pacific/asian outbreaks (which have been very large this year) that these imported sources of Dengue can be better controlled.
